Italy - Information on Molinara in the Province of Benevento

Situated on a hill at the foot of Mount Caffarello, the village is surrounded by unpolluted and luxuriant nature with rich fauna. Molinara has medioeval origins, even if archaeological finds bear witness of a human settlement already in the Roman Age. The first well-gounded news dates back to 1118, during the Norman Age, when Raimondo di Loritello owned it. Later on, it became De Capua family’s feud, then Caracciolo’s, passing to the Muscettola di Spezzano, who owned it up to the abolition of feudalism.

After the unity of Italy it joined the province of Benevento. Deeply damaged by the earthquake in 1962, it has been completely rebuilt. Its inhabitants were forced to quit the ancient, medioeval built-up area, characterized by small streets, widenings and palaces, such as the ducal palace. At present, the old built-up area is still being renewed and revitalized.
