Italy - Information on Limatola in the Province of Benevento

The town of Limatola is situated on the right-hand side of the river Volturno and only a few kilometres away from Caserta. The historical centre is characteristic, clinging around the Norman castle, that has been enlarged and modified in the course of ages.
The earliest historical data goes back to 842, when a fight happened here between Longobards from Benevento and Salerno. However finds seem to attest that a town settlement has been existing since the Roman Age.

In the Middle Ages it was Guglielmo de Beaumont’s, the Marzano family’s, Della Ratta’s, Acquaviva’s, de Capua’s, Gambacorta’s, Mastelloni’s finally Carafa di Maddaloni’s estate, who owned it until the abolition of feudalism.
On the unity of Italy it was annexed to the province of Benevento.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Ruins of the castle
2. Church of the Annunziata
3. Church of St. Biagio
4. Church of St. Eligio
