Italy - Information on Fragneto L'Abate in the Province of Benevento
Fragneto l’Abate, an agricultural village, is situated on the peak of a hill: its origins go back to the High Middle Ages, but some archaeological findings bear witness of a human settlement already in the Roman period.
During the Norman period it was first annexed to the county of Ariano and then it was ceded to the Abbey of Santa Sofia of Benevento. In 1763 Ferdinand IV the Bourbon took this possession away from the clerical power and incorporated it in the Royal Court; he then gave it to the Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo, whose family owned it until the abolition of feudalism. After the unification of Italy it became part of the province of Benevento.
