Italy - Information on Forchia in the Province of Benevento

Forchia is situated on a woody hill, rich in chestnut trees, at the foot of Mount St. Bernardo. The village is renowned because it is near the place where the Samnites beat the Romans in the famous battle of 321 b.C. According to some histographers, its name originates from the Latin “forcula”, which means “gorge, pass”, since it is situated between two mountains.

In the Longobard period Forchia was the capital of a “castaldato” (the Longobard administrative unit). Afterwards it followed almost uninterruptedly the feudal and administrative events of the neighbouring centre of Arpaia; then it passed to the Della Leonessa family, the Guevara, the Carafa and finally the Caracciolo. In 1861, after the unity of Italy, it became part of the province of Benevento.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Vestiges of ancient Samnite cisterns
2. Palace D’Ambrosio
3. Church of St. Alfonso de’ Liguori
4. Church of St. Nicola
