Italy - Information on Colle Sannita in the Province of Benevento
Colle Sannita, of Norman origins, was a feud of the Della Marra family, then of the Della Leonessa and finally of the Di Somma. In 1647, during the rebellion organized by Masaniello, in which Colle participated, it was conquered by the barons loyal to Spain. In the decade 1806-1815 it was a haunt of brigands. Subsequently it was part of the Capitanata, then incorporated in the province of Campobasso and in 1861 in the province of Benevento.
Going southwards, out of the built-up area, at the junction to Circello, the Chapel Santa Maria della Libera stands, built exactly where in 1439 the commander and mercenary captain Giacomo Caldora suddenly died. He wanted to sack the village during the battle between the Angevins and the Aragons.
Not far from the village, in Decorata, in a charming natural environment, there is a small lake in the middle of a flourishing wood, an ideal destination for families who want to rest and relax on the shores of the lake, enjoying the sun and the marvellous freshness of these places.
NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Historical centre
2. Church of Annunziata, restored in different periods and dating back to the beginning of the 16th c.
3. Church of St. Nicola with its portal of the half of 13th c.
4. Church of St. Giorgio and its tower
