Italy - Information on Circello in the Province of Benevento

Circello, of Norman origins, takes its name from ”querce” (oaks), that were, and still are, abundant on this territory. Several archaeological findings bear witness of the presence of a human settlement already in the Samnite period. In the Middle Ages it was a feud of the Carafa family first and then of the Di Somma. It was part of the Capitanata until 1809 and then became part of the Molise; finally, in 1861 it was annexed to the province of Benevento.

Not far away, in the centre of Macchia, some archaeological findings testify of a built-up area in the Roman age, seat of the colony of the “Liguri Baebiani”, who moved here from Liguria in 181 b.C.

Worth a note is also the so-called “Tabula Alimentaria Bebiana”, in the centre of Macchia.
This bronze plate, about 2 m. high and 1 m. long, is kept inside the Museo Nazionale delle Terme in Rome. The engravings on the plate are about the funds mortgaged by the Liguri Baebiani in exchange for loans by the Emperor.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
historical centre with the three ancient gates and the tower
remains of the Ducal castle
church of San Nicola with its thirteenth-century portal
church of San Francesco
the characteristic neo-classical fountain built with local stone
