Italy - Information on Castelvenere in the Province of Benevento

Castelvenere is situated in a green hill scenery, streaked by straight vine-rows, stretching as far as the eye can see. Various elements bear witness human settlements since the Prehistorical age. Famous Longobard centre, it is renowned for being the birthplace of St. Barbato, Bishop of Benevento: he upheld the Longobards’ convertion to Christianity. It was a feud of the Sanframondo family first and then of the Carafa who possessed it up to the abolition of feudalism. On the unity of Italy it was annexed to the province of Benevento.

NOT TO BE MISSED - 1. The historical centre and the ruins of the castle 2. Church of S. Nicola and church of S. Maria della Foresta. Worth a visit are some old places, excavated in the tufa, now used to grow vine and to preserve wine, prove that this kind of farm produce is very old, even if today people keep on making it by modern techniques.
