Italy - Information on Buonalbergo in the Provence of Benevento

Lively agricultural town situated along the main road connecting Benevento to Puglia, it was a strategic and almost obligatory passage for farmers, soldiers and mercenaries wanting to reach the neighbouring region.

Historical origins go back to the Neolithic age, but the first settlements were already present in the Samnite period. Mentioned by Titus Livy as a fundamental strategic point during the Samnite wars, histographers identified the town as the ancient Cluvia.
When the Emperor Trajan built the via Traiana, connecting Benevento with Brindisi and running through the entire village of Buonalbergo, it became an important centre for agricultural commerce. It was a feud of the Spinelli and the Coscia families and then, with the unity of Italy, it went down in history as the first village of the province to raise the Italian flag.
