About Arpaia
Arpaia is situated in a gorge between Mount Tairano and Mount Castello.
Some historians agree in thinking that the gorge is the “gola “ mentioned by Titus Livy. It is thought to have been the place where the humiliating defeat at the “Forche Caudine” occurred.
A lot of wars took place here in the course of the centuries, because Arpaia is a village on the road to Apulia, trekked by traders and the armies.
Conquered by the Aragoneses in 1438, it was Ferrante D’Aragona’s estate in 1461, becoming the Guevara family’s, Arienzo’s, Carafa’s, Caracciolo’s and De Capua family’s feud from 1591 on.
The De Capua family owned it until the abolition of feudalism.
