About Apice

Archaeological finds seem to attest that a town settlement has existed since the Roman Age, but well-grounded data about the urban site goes back to the 12th century.
Being close to Benevento, it became an important village and passed to the Earls of Ariano under the Norman rule.

A proof of the political and miliatry importance that Apice had in the Norman Age is the Castle, renewed and rebuilt several times due to the earthquakes occurred over the centuties.

The terrible earthquake in 1962, that destroyed almost completely the old medieval village, forced the inhabitants to move the built-up area on the hill opposite the old settlement.

Today the old villlage is still being renewed in order to bring back to light the ancient town and culture.
It’s a popular tradition that Sant’Antonio da Padova and San Francesco d’Assisi passed here.
Saint Francesco d’Assisi is thought to have built a monastery in 1222, that was possibly destroyed by an earthquake in 1546.
