Information about Stroppiana in the Province of Vercelli
This stands on the right bank of the Marcova spring, north-west of its convergence with the river Sesia.
The dedication of the parish to Saint Michael makes one hypothesise about the likely longobardic origins of the village, even if the first historical testimonies refer to the name of Stirpiana in the X century. The parish of Saint Michael was founded in an unspecified epoch; we know that it was demolished at the end of the XVI century and subjected to various phases of reconstruction; the last one was in 1760, on the design of Barberis.
The façade is built in the baroque style and develops horizontally. It is divided into five sections by pilasters; it is decorated by recent paintings situated one above the central door and three beyond the stringcourse frame, on the external coronations. The central one is equipped with a triangular tympanum, whilst the lateral ones have curved shaped. The interior is divided into three naves and amongst other things there is an eighteenth century organ and a beautiful baroque pulpit carved in wood; the dividing pillars are covered in marble.
In the village you can also find the church if Saint Martha with the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, the object of fervent popular devotion, where the Deposition of Jesus is kept, a group of sculptures in terracotta. In front of the town hall building there is the Monumento ai caduti (Monument to the fallen); there is also the ancient remains of the castle, where the small chapel of Saint Juliana was built.
