Bergamo, Eine Kunststadt
Bergamo ist auf einem Hügel entstanden. Diese Besonderheit ist auf eine erste antike Siedlung in vorgeschichtlicher Epoche zurückzuführen. Der älteste Teil, umgeben von Stadtmauern, befindet sich oben, während die moderne Stadt sich in der Ebene entwickelt hat.
Oben auf dem Hügel folgten sich Kelten, Goten, Römer und Langobarden, doch von diesen längst vergangenen Kulturen ist sehr wenig übrig geblieben. Einige der wichtigsten Monumente stammen aus dem Mittelalter.
Die bedeutendste Periode fällt auf die vier Jahrhunderte, in welchen Bergamo unter der Herrschaft Venedigs stand. Während dieser Zeit verband eine sehr enge, sowohl historische als auch kulturelle Beziehung, diese beiden Städte miteinander.
Piazza Vecchia
Auf der Piazza Vecchia, im Herzen der Altstadt, stehen einige der historisch wichtigsten Stadtgebäude: der Palazzo del Comune oder della Ragione, der Stadtturm, der Palazzo des venezianischen Stadtvogts sowie derjenige der Bibliothek Angelo Mai, früher Sitz der Stadtverwaltung.
Gleich daneben liegt die Piazzetta del Duomo, ein im wesentlichen religiösen Zwecken dienender Platz, um welchen sich die Kathedrale, die Basilika Santa Maria Maggiore, die Kappelle Colleoni und das Baptisterium ringen.
