Spanish Steps in Rome Italy
The Scalinata di Trinita dei Monti is the crowning glory of the Piazza - an elegantly cascading Rococo stairway of golden stone financed by the French, designed by an Italian, but commonly known as the 'Spanish Steps'! A popular meeting point for lovers and shoppers, and favourite hangout for youths, the 137, steps are crowded day and night, as people while away the hours chatting and watching the rest of Rome rush by.
Undoubtedly one of the best places to people -watch or to while away some sunny hours writing postcards.
At the foot of the steps, there is a charming fountain in the shape of a half sunken barge (La Barcaccia, 1629), wittily designed by Bernini's father Pietro to solve the problem of the low water level of the ancient aqueduct Acqua Vergine, which originally fed the Pantheon and many of the fountains and baths of ancient Rome. It is said that his inspiration for the fountain was a massive flooding of the Tiber on Christmas Day 1598, which stranded a similar barge on top of Pincio Hill!
At the summit of the Spanish Steps, twin towered Trinita dei Monti is Rome's most photographed church. Inside, the colourful frescoes of the transept by Raphael's star pupil Giulio Romano and the two fine paintings by Michelangelo's prodigy, Daniele da Volterra (Descent from the Cross and The Assumption) are worth a glimpse, but the main reason to visit the church is to admire the stupendous views over the rooftops of Rome from the entrance
