Allerona in Umbria, Italy
Allerona is situated on a hill between the Ripuglie and Rivalcale streams, tributaries of the Paglia river. Its economy is traditionally based on agriculture (wine and grain) and handicraft activities. It is well-known for its embroidery and lace making.
Brief History
The ancient origins of Allerona are almost lost. Historical documents mention the destruction of a castle at Lerona (12th cent.) and Allerona being dominated by Orvieto until it became part of the Church State.
Sights To See
In the centre of town - Ruins of the feudal castle of Lerona (12th cent.). Ruins of the ancient walls with Gate of the Sun and Gate of the Moon, (respectively Porta del Sole and Porta della Luna). Church of S. Maria della Stella (15th cent.)
Surrounding Area
Ruins of the Roman aqueduct, Octagonal Temple of the Madonna dell’Acqua (lit. Madonna of the Water). Villalba Park.
Folklore and Events
